Random color palette generator

One color rarely settles a design on its own. This block gives you five at once — press the button as many times as you like, and copy the hex codes of any set you want to keep.

These five are independently random, so they will not always agree with each other. For a set chosen to work together, describe what you want on the home page and let the generator build it.

How random colors are generated

Each color here is a random number between 0 and 16,777,215, written as six hexadecimal digits: two for red, two for green, two for blue. That is every color a standard screen can show, and each one is equally likely.

Being uniformly random is not the same as being useful. Picking from the whole range produces a lot of muddy mid-tones and very few clean pastels, so if you want a specific mood it is faster to generate a color, then use the brightness, saturation and warmth sliders above to steer it.

What a random color is good for

  • Breaking a habit: most of us reach for the same few hues, and a random starting point forces a fresh direction.
  • Placeholder and test data — assigning colors to users, tags or chart series before the real design exists.
  • Finding a name: every color here comes with its closest named match, which is often easier to search for than a hex code.
  • A drawing or lettering prompt when you want the palette decided for you.

Common questions

How do I generate a random color?

Press the button at the top of the page, or tap the space bar. Each press gives a new color with its hex, RGB and name, ready to copy.

Can I get a random palette instead of one color?

Yes — use the five-color block above. For a palette whose colors are chosen to sit well together rather than independently at random, generate one from a description on the home page.

Are the colors really random?

They come from the browser's own random number generator, spread evenly across all 16.7 million RGB values. They are random enough for design work, though not for anything cryptographic.

How do I keep a color I like?

Copy its hex or RGB value with the buttons under the swatch. To keep a whole set, generate a palette from it — that gives you a page you can share and come back to.
