How it works

A segmentation model looks at your photo and decides, pixel by pixel, how much belongs to the main subject. That map becomes the alpha channel of a PNG, so the subject stays and everything else turns transparent. The model is an open one that your browser downloads once and keeps, and the maths runs on your graphics chip when the browser allows it and on the processor when it does not.

Because nothing is sent to a server, ColorMagic pays nothing per image. That is why the tool has no sign-up, no watermark and no daily quota.

Getting a clean cut-out

  • Pick a photo where the subject is lit well and stands apart from what is behind it.
  • Use Fast for portraits and Detailed for products, pets and plants.
  • Put the result on a solid colour first. Small edge flaws that show on a transparent background often vanish on a colour that suits the subject.
  • Need a colour for that background? Pull a palette from the photo or generate one, then check the text on it with the contrast checker.

Common questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The model is downloaded to your browser and the cut-out is computed on your own device. The image is not sent to ColorMagic or to anyone else, which is also why there is no queue and no daily limit.

Why does the first image take longer?

The first cut-out downloads the model: 6.6 to 26 MB for Fast mode, depending on your device, 114 MB for Detailed mode. Your browser keeps it, so the next image starts at once, and it works again later on the same device.

Which mode should I pick?

Fast is tuned for people and portraits, and it is the one that suits a phone. Detailed handles products, pets, plants and other objects with finer edges such as hair and fur, but it needs a browser with WebGPU (recent Chrome, Edge, Safari and Android) and a download of about 114 MB.

Can I use the result commercially?

Yes for the tool and its output: we picked open models with commercial licences (MODNet is Apache 2.0, BiRefNet is MIT) so that you can use a cut-out in a shop listing, an ad or a design. You still need the rights to the photo you start with.

What image formats and sizes work?

JPG, PNG and WebP. Very large photos are scaled down to 2400 pixels on the long side before processing, to keep a phone from running out of memory. The download is a PNG with a transparent background, or with the white or colour you choose.

The edges look rough. What can I do?

Try the other mode, use a photo where the subject stands apart from the background, and avoid heavy filters. A solid colour behind the cut-out hides small edge flaws better than a transparent one.
